Frequently asked questions.
Q. Is laser hair removal right for me?
A. Laser hair removal does not work on blonde, gray, or red hair because the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle, making dark hair the most responsive to treatment. While results can vary, factors like skin tone, hair type, and hormonal influences can affect the outcome. A consultation allows for a thorough assessment to set realistic expectations and determine if you are an ideal candidate for long-term hair reduction.
Q. How does laser hair reduction work?
A. Laser hair removal uses specific wavelengths of light to target the pigment in hair follicles. For lighter skin tones (types 1-3), a 755nm Alexandrite or 810nm Diode laser is typically used, while darker skin tones (types 4-6) are treated with a 1064nm Nd:YAG laser to ensure safety and effectiveness. The laser energy is absorbed by the hair's pigment, heating the follicle and disabling it to prevent future hair growth.
Q. Does the procedure hurt?
A.Some discomfort is expected during laser hair removal, but a cold air cooling system is used to numb the treatment area and minimize pain. While this helps make the process more tolerable, topical numbing creams are not recommended as they can interfere with the effectiveness of the laser.
Q. How many sessions will hair removal require?
A. Not all hair follicles are growing at the same time. About 1/3 of a person’s follicles are dormant at any given time and cannot be disabled with a laser. We give you an estimate of minimum expected treatments given the desired outcome whether it is minimal hair reduction or maximum. Remember, there is not a guarantee.
Q. How often do I come in?
A. We have found scheduling 4 to 8 weeks apart gives the most effective treatment.
Q. What should I expect after my treatment?
A. Immediately after treatment, you may experience redness, swelling and edema. In 1-2 weeks you will notice the successfully targeted hairs falling out! Although rare, it is possible to have hyper (darkening of the skin) or hypo (lighting of the skin) pigmentation. Unforeseen complications can occur and last up to months, years or permanently, but DO NOT let that scare you. There are always risks with every procedure. Please see the consent form for more information.
Q. Should I put anything on afterwards/ what to avoid?
A. Moisturizer is always good. Apply sunscreen and keep the treated area covered to minimize sun exposure during the hair removal process. Avoid friction in the treated area for 1-2 days post-treatment like vigorous exercise, tight clothing, exfoliation and shaving. Stay away from hot tubs or direct sunlight on the treatment site for 1-2 days after each treatment.
